Recent federal legislation, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OB3), includes significant changes to federal student loan programs and borrowing limits. While some implementation details continue to emerge, the Office of Student Financial Aid has been actively preparing for these changes for many months and remains committed to helping students, families, and campus partners understand what these changes may mean.

We recognize that changes to financial aid programs during a student's academic journey can create uncertainty. Our students remain our first priority, and we are committed to providing clear information, timely updates, and personalized guidance as federal requirements evolve.

Since the legislation was first introduced and debated, the Office of Student Financial Aid has closely monitored developments and collaborated with regional and national financial aid associations, state partners, and Big Ten institutions to better understand potential impacts and implementation requirements. As federal guidance becomes available, we continue to review information, update resources, and identify ways to support students and families.

Recognizing that many of the most significant changes affect graduate and professional students, we have worked closely with college and departmental partners to provide timely updates, answer questions, and share information about the evolving federal aid landscape. We have also provided presentations and informational sessions for undergraduate advising and student support partners, helping campus colleagues understand potential impacts for students and families and connect them with appropriate resources.

Since August 2025, the Office of Student Financial Aid has developed webpages, articles, presentations, newsletters, and other educational resources to help students, families, and campus partners better understand the legislation and its potential impact. As additional federal guidance becomes available, we continue to update these resources, communicate directly with affected students, and provide tools and information that support informed borrowing and financial planning decisions.

We strive to help students understand how those changes may affect their individual circumstances, evaluate available options, and connect with resources that support their educational goals. As implementation continues, we remain committed to providing transparent communication, practical guidance, and support for students and families navigating these changes.

Students and families are encouraged to review the resources below and contact our office with questions about their individual circumstances.
